Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need counselling?

You may know the specific issue that is holding you back, such as depression or anxiety but you may also just feel stuck, like something is preventing you from living your life the way you want to. Either way, if you feel you may need the support of a counsellor, then you probably need a counsellor.

Sometimes, we need an objective perspective to help us understand our problems better. A counsellor can observe your reality and ask questions that will challenge your current thoughts and feelings so you can develop more positive ways to manage your emotions.

How long do I need to see a counsellor for?

This depends on your situation. No two clients are the same and each issue presents in a way that is unique to you. If you need to work towards a specific goal, then you may only need a few sessions of counselling.

If you need to explore your experiences more deeply, or through the process you identify other thoughts or feelings that are holding you back then you may need to see a counsellor for longer. The key is not to put pressure on yourself to achieve a certain goal by a certain time as the added stress may prevent you from making the progress you are looking for.

What happens in a counselling session?

As counselling is talking therapy, that is what we will do. You share the issues that you are struggling with and the emotions you are feeling, and we will explore them in detail. You bring the issues you want to discuss to each session, and I am here to listen carefully, to validate and accept your feelings, and ask questions to help you understand what the root cause is to your difficulties. Everything you share in our sessions is confidential, and there is no judgment.

Through counselling, I will help you challenge your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, so you can understand them better. You will become more self aware and this will help you find positive ways to manage your emotions and move towards achieving your goals.

Do I need to be referred to a counsellor by my GP?

No. Although your GP recommends counselling as a way to work through your issues, you do not have to visit your GP before reaching out for support. If you know the issue that you are struggling with, or you just feel that something isn’t right, preventing you from living your life on your terms, then you can just reach out to see if we can work together.

How often do I need to see a counsellor for?

Most people see a counsellor on a weekly basis. This enables us to pick up where we left off each week, which means that no time is lost and you can work towards achieving your goals more quickly. This also gives you time to work on strategies that we develop in between sessions so you can make progress to managing your emotions and behaviours better. Some people like to see a counsellor on a fortnightly basis, which can still work, but any longer in between sessions might prevent you from making the progress you need.

How do I book my first appointment?

Please contact me by email or telephone and we can have a chat about your current struggles and how I may be able to help.

What is counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling often refers to shorter therapy with a clear focus on a specific goal. Psychotherapy can often be longer term, exploring deeper rooted experiences and how they affect your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Whatever your need, I work in a way to make sure you get the right support for you and your specific needs.

How long do counselling and psychotherapy take?

This depends on you and your unique circumstances. Some clients decide as they go, staying with counselling for the longer term, while others have a specific goal in mind and tailor the number of sessions accordingly.

I can work with you over the longer or the shorter term, depending on your needs and goals. It is entirely up to you to decide how long you want to stay; we can discuss your goals and expectations in our first session together.

Who do you work with?

I work with any adult, from young adults through to elder years clients, and couples who think they may need support in helping them achieve their goals.

How would I pay?

You can pay with by card, cheque or bank transfer, preferably before the scheduled session takes place.

What about my privacy?

I take your confidentiality very seriously. I am registered with the Information Commisioners’s Office ( ICO), the data protection regulator.

Counselling is confidential; I will not share information about you with a third party without your permission, so i will not tell anyone that you attend sessions. During Zoom video sessions, I will be in a room where you can not be overheard or seen on my screen by anyone else. I hope that for your own safety and privacy, I will do the same. Finally, I will not record any session without you giving me consent to do so.

Although video call platforms offer a degree of security and encryption, it is not possible to guarantee how the companies providing these services will handle data relating to the call.
